Dave P. - The Blind Leading The Blind

Actually its not "The Blind Leading The Blind". I have learned so much from Barbra during the past year! It has been a lot of fun, Barbra is a fantastic instructor!

Dick - More Grandkids

Again, used program mode to get a faster shutter speed (f/4.0, 1/60 sec.) Manual was way to slow even with high ISO. The shot of the little one shows that you've got to be quick - no time to experiment. An additional light source would have prevented shadowing.

I let the camera make the decisions by setting it on Portrait mode, external flash and homemade diffuser added.

Dick - Portraits of Two Grandkids

In these shots I used program mode (f/4.0, 1/60 sec.) with flash because of the lack of ambient light. The flash was directed toward the ceiling. Wearing a baseball cap will shadow the face so I had to pay particular attention to that challenge. As a recent draft pick of the San Francisco Giants it was only appropriate that I shoot Ryan in his cap and sweatshirt. His sister, Alison, wanted to wear hers as well.

Portrait - Deana

Thanksgiving Day - Family friends wanted some photos taken. Here is just one...and I thought about the class assignment using lights

Portrait

I took this of my sister-in-law over Thanksgiving. I used my new flash on a remote cord with a small soft box angled on her left and a reflector on her right. Took several tries to get flash dialed down. This was a quick shot when cricket the cat joined in and it was the best one. This is unedited.

My friend Anne who is a professional portait photographer up North spend a few hours walking talking and coaching me.  We played with my camera, and this is the result.  F/4.5, 69 mm, 1.250s, low fill flash, sunny ini a shaded area, WB Auto.

1/8s, low flash, f/4.8. ISO 160.  Thanksgiving day image of my dad and daughter.  Dad is 91,and has been been very ill in the last two week.   We all came together with a lot of family energy to have everyone present.

Linda W - Portrait

The images of the girls were taken using a Canon XTI Portrait Mode with flash 1/60, F4.5 & 5.0 respectively, ISO 400.
Need to purchase or construct a reflector to reduce the harsh shadow? Yes?
This image was taken at night with the camera flash and tub lights, no additional lighting. I believe the tub lights changed to green as the picture was snapped creating the unusual chest color. Partial metering, 1/60, F4, ISO 100. Of the three photos this is my favorite because it is spontaneous.

Portrait

I was trying to practice portrait shots with my mom, but the kids kept wanting to be in the pictures, too. I would have liked to have tried more poses and lighting arrangements, but it just wasn't working with the kids around. So here's one of the 'better' shots. The shutter speed was too slow for the fast moving kid, but like I said, I was intending to just photograph an adult who could hold still :-)

The subjects (my son and his wife) were available only for a limited time and I couldn't find a good background. This is the best of the bunch.

"Portrait" Not!

For this weeks assignment, I set out to practice
shooting portraits. People not included... my intent was to take a photo with my son (when he returned) and his dog. As you can see, Missy was fine with the close up shot, which was our first of many shots. While attempting to get the correct settings between the camera and the flash, I was quickly loosing the interest with my subject. The final and last shot is with the cat. Not wanting to be left out, he gracefully took his rightful place! My saving grace is Bambi's Tip #1 "EXPRESSION BEATS PERFECTION" as these pic's are far from perfect...

People pictures aren't a fav of mine. No one wants me to take their portrait, even for a class project. I took this shot of Brian in class last week.

Dave P. - Portrait

I did not get much time to take as many photos of people that I wanted. I just learned that I have to be in at Lake Chelan for the next 3 days and will not be back until our class, I hope. So I grabbed one of my son's friends. This was taken using my studio lights. I had a 36 inch umbrella with a flash set behind me. I used a spot light for the background behind the subject and a soft box to the right facing down onto the subject. I thought the catch light worked well. 1/60, F11, ISO 500.

Zane ~ Neighborhood Views

My neighborhood for Halloween weekend was Lake Chelan, so I thought I'd share a group of photos taken on my wanderings around the lake on a beautiful sunny fall day with just a hint of colder weather to come.

       Birch Bark
This is a close-up of birch bark posed against the foliage and sky at the tree crown.  The sun hit the tree from the south east at about 1:00 in the afternoon.  I like this because it juxtaposes basic black and white texture against a blurred colorful background.

Meta data:  focal length 42mm, exposure 1/2000s, f/4.5, ISO 200, spot metering, sun WB, hard sharpness.

                                                                                                                            My Pony
This pony was grazing on a farm pasture as a drove by -- stopped right away and knew there was a photo waiting.  AS I walked up with the camera, he came over to the fence for a visit.   He put that snout through the fence, and there was the shot!   In the enlarged version, you can see his nose whiskers.

Meta data: focal length 16mm, exposure 1/640s, f/8.0, ISO 160, -1 flash fill flash.

                                                                    Yellow Blaze
This very large maple was located on the lake shore in a grove of birch, maple, pine and other trees.  The traditional fall colors caught my attention because the yellow is so overwhelming standing under the tree, with the vivid blue sky poking between the branches and leaves.  The front is a bit blown out, but I think you get the idea.

Meta data: focal length 21 mm, exposure 1/80s, f/5.0, ISO 200, sun WB, metering center weight.

5 square blocks at home.

I approached this assignment similar to the 40 shots of a single object after I found this beautiful maple leaf.

5 Square blocks-assignment

These were taken around my neighborhood. All were taken in the morning, around 8:30 a.m. My favorite shots ended up being the close-up ones. I like the "pattern" of the dewdrops on the first picture. I like the complementary colors of the pink flower and green grass in the second picture, and it sort of reminds me of a skirt twirling, which is why the soft focus of the petals doesn't bother me. The third picture captures how I felt on those amazingly sunny, WARM mornings last week...like I was reaching up to soak in the last bit of warmth before the weather changes. I was attempting to play with sun flare and backlighting. I took some landscape pictures of the fall colors, but they just didn't 'speak' to me.
